The Art of Chinese Characters
Chinese language instructor Weiwei Zhang debuted a new 102 course for the Undergraduate Colleges this Spring The Art of Chinese Characters. This introductory course focused on how Chinese characters are an important part of Chinese language not only because they serve as writing functions but hold artistic value as well. Students in this course and also her CHI 120 (Elementary Chinese for Heritage speakers) practiced and developed their calligraphy skills and produced beautiful works in the oldest logophonetic script still being used today! From its 6 methods of formation to 8 basic rules of stroke orders to 5 major script styles of Chinese calligraphy, each Chinese character reflects its deep cultural heritage, and demonstrates many new ways of visual art forms with modern technologies today.
